Life after a concussion can feel like an endless struggle, especially when you're bombarded with symptoms such as pain, dizziness, nausea, brain fog and headaches. Studies show that about 15 percent of people with a concussion experience post-concussion symptoms. The limitations these symptoms impose can be incredibly frustrating, particularly if you yearn to run, hike, swim, and enjoy life without boundaries.
If you dream of spending active time with your children, climbing mountains, sleeping better, and feeling genuinely happy again, you're not alone. Many people feel hopeless and resigned to these symptoms, believing this may be their new normal. But it doesn’t have to be this way. There is another path to recovery, one that doesn’t rely solely on the traditional Western medicine model.
Here’s how you can start to reclaim your life with my support.
Tip 1: Be Willing to Try Something Different
The first step to overcoming post-concussion symptoms and achieving the freedom of movement you desire is to open your mind to a different way. While Western medicine provides valuable treatments, sometimes the improvements are short-lived in concussion recovery.
When I was trying to recover from my concussion some of the Western medicine approaches would cause a 7-hour headache! I grew increasingly frustrated by the slow progress and decided to try something I had never tried before. Using yoga therapy I was able to become aware of how my body was moving and how some of the movement patterns could be contributing to my headaches. To truly heal, you must be willing to explore new methods and integrate them into your routine.
I specialize in an approach that includes breath, movement, and stillness to help you become aware of what your body is telling you. By combining these elements, you can start to see improvements in your symptoms. For instance, different breathing techniques can help settle your nervous system and help you become aware of how your body is moving.
Tip 2: Know There is Another Way
Feeling trapped in your current state is understandable, but it's crucial to recognize that there is another way. Many people have successfully navigated their post-concussion journey by stepping outside conventional treatments and embracing a more integrated approach.
Yoga therapy focuses on reconnecting you with your body through activities that promote overall well-being. Imagine running without dizziness, hiking without pain, or swimming without nausea. These goals are achievable by using small movements in a pain free range instead of working through the pain or into the pain.
I was very skeptical when I first learned of yoga therapy. How can such small movements lead to healing? Yet, it did! Slowly, I regained energy, balance and strength. My headaches became shorter in duration and less intense, and my sleep improved! I was able to add the Western medicine exercises again without the 7-hour headache returning.
Tip 3: Trust The Process, Yourself, and a Caring Professional
The journey to recovery requires trust—both in yourself and in the process. Trust that your body has the innate ability to heal and that with the right support, you can overcome your symptoms. My approach is grounded in expertise and compassion, designed to guide you every step of the way.
